Name Change in India - Affidavit, Newspaper Notice and Gazette
The usual steps
An adult usually swears an affidavit stating the old and new names, publishes a notice in newspapers as required, and applies for publication in the Gazette of India. The Gazette notification is widely accepted as proof of the change.
Updating records
After the notification, update the name with the Aadhaar authority, PAN, bank accounts, passport, driving licence, educational certificates and employer records. Some offices have their own forms and ask for the Gazette copy.
Marriage, minors and religion
A name change after marriage is usually supported by the marriage certificate. For a minor the parents act, with consent from both where possible. A change of religion that involves a new name is handled in a similar way.
Passport and certificates
The passport has its own procedure through the passport authority, and educational certificates need a request to the board or university with the supporting documents.
Frequently asked questions
Is a Gazette notification compulsory?
Not in every case, but many authorities ask for it, so it is the safest way to prove the change.
Can I change my date of birth the same way?
No. A date of birth correction follows a different and stricter procedure, often needing a court order or a corrected record from the issuing authority.
How long does it take?
It varies, but publication and updates across offices can take a few weeks to a few months.
