I was just terminated - what should I do first?

Save a copy of the termination letter/email, your appointment letter, all salary slips, and any performance reviews, before you lose access to your work email or systems. Do not sign any exit or settlement document on the spot without reading it fully.

Is my termination legal?

It depends on whether your contract's and the Standing Orders' termination process was followed, whether you were given the notice or pay in lieu specified, and whether there's any indication of a protected reason (like retaliation for a complaint, or termination during protected leave). Not every termination that feels unfair is legally wrongful, but many are not properly executed.

When should I get my final salary and dues?

Under the Code on Wages, full and final settlement is generally required within two working days of the last working day in many circumstances - a long, unexplained delay beyond that is itself something that can be formally escalated.

Should I sign the settlement/full-and-final document they've given me?

Read it fully before signing, particularly any clause releasing the employer from all future claims - once signed, it is difficult to reopen even if you later realise a dues calculation was wrong. A quick review before signing costs little and protects you significantly.

What if they are withholding my relieving letter or dues over a dispute?

A written demand followed by a formal legal notice is the standard escalation path, followed by a labour commissioner complaint or civil recovery suit depending on your role and the amount involved. Document every communication in writing from this point on.

Can I negotiate a better exit instead of just accepting it?

Often yes, particularly where the termination process had gaps - a quick consultation before accepting the first terms offered, especially if severance, notice pay, or the reason given seem inconsistent with your contract.
